Epidemiology studies how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why. By understanding the incidence, distribution and control methods of a disease, epidemiology helps us guide policy and find optimal ways of fighting diseases.

epidemiology-2KNCV supports essential epidemiological research that is focused on measuring the prevalence of tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease. KNCV supports the active investigation of transmission of tuberculosis, the prevalence and distribution of drug resistant tuberculosis and tuberculosis-HIV co-infection and analyzes surveillance data.

Epidemiological data does not only form the foundation of TB control policy, but it is also the most important means to monitor the impact of policy changes.

Furthermore, epidemiological data measures essential requirements for adequate TB control:

  • the burden of TB infection and disease, within specific groups,
  • the extent and determinants of transmission of TB infection,
  • the proportion of TB cases detected and treated.

Besides supporting TB control efforts, epidemiological assessments are an important requirement for Global Fund grant applications. By assisting National TB programs in gathering the necessary data, KNCV is directly supporting these initiatives in the fight against TB. By facilitating the distribution of available assistance, through epidemiological data, essential plans and analyses, KNCV helps turn good intensions into lives saved.
